Victorian terrace with a rear box dormer in Dingle

A multifoil installation completed for a Victorian terrace with a rear box dormer in Dingle by one of the vetted installers we work with. We started with nothing in the dormer cheeks and a thin, gapped layer on the slope — here is what changed, in the installer's own photographs.

Before: the loft of a Victorian terrace with a rear box dormer in Liverpool, ahead of the multifoil installation
BeforeBefore: the roof slope as we found it, with little or no effective insulation between the rafters.
During: SuperFOIL SF19 multifoil being installed in a Liverpool loft
DuringDuring: SuperFOIL SF19 being fitted across the rafters, with joints taped as the work goes.
After: the completed SuperFOIL SF19 multifoil installation in a Liverpool loft
AfterAfter: the finished multifoil layer, with the ventilation gaps kept clear above and below.

These photographs are from a real loft project carried out by one of the vetted installers we work with. Liverpool Loft Insulation arranges the free survey and the written quote; the installation itself is carried out and guaranteed by the installer. Property details are described in general terms — we do not publish customer names or addresses.

What the installer found

The property is a Victorian terrace with a rear box dormer, a type you see a great deal of around Dingle and the streets near it. The starting point was nothing in the dormer cheeks and a thin, gapped layer on the slope — well short of what a roof needs to hold heat in through the winter and keep it out through the summer.

Before anything was specified, the loft was checked properly: the access, the joist layout, the condition of whatever was already up there, the airflow at the eaves and any sign of moisture. That inspection is what decides the work. A photograph and a phone call are not enough to specify a loft, and we would not quote a job on that basis.

What was done

The recommendation was SuperFOIL SF19 across rafters, cheeks and the dormer ceiling across roughly 27m² of slope and cheeks, with air gaps preserved behind the foil throughout. The work took one day, and the loft was cleared and left tidy at the end of it.

Multifoil earns its place where headroom is tight — a converted loft, a room in the roof, a shallow pitch. It is a layered reflective product fitted at rafter level with an air gap either side, so the ventilation path has to be planned before anything goes up. SF19 is a product, not a depth.

The result

The dormer bedroom stopped being the room nobody wanted to sleep in. A typical price range for work of this size and type in Liverpool is £1,180–£1,420. The only figure that really means anything, though, is the one on your own written quote — after someone has been up and looked.

Is your loft similar?

If your home is anything like this one — thin or settled insulation, a converted room that never quite feels right, storage sitting straight on top of the layer, or simply no idea what is up there — the first step is the same for everyone.
